Online Public Meeting

Welcome!

Thank you for visiting Berkeley County’s online meeting for the US 176 Phase 2 Corridor Improvement Project. This online meeting shares the same information and materials as the in-person public meeting and serves to provide an additional opportunity for the public to participate and submit comments.

The purpose of this online meeting is to:

  • Introduce the Project and Project Team

  • Present information on environmental studies and traffic analysis

  • Gather your feedback to guide our next steps

Project Overview

The US 176 Phase 2 Corridor Improvement Project aims to accommodate an increase in traffic volume and address increasing congestion on US 176 between Nexton Parkway and Jedburg Road. This 2.7-mile corridor is experiencing rapid growth, and the Project is designed to improve traffic flow and enhance safety for both residents and commuters. The project is funded through the Berkeley County Transportation Sales Tax Program. To the right is a quick highlight of the Project, take a look at what could be coming to the corridor!

Purpose & Need

The Purpose & Need statement describes why this project is being proposed. It outlines the core issues this project aims to address and sets the stage for evaluating design alternatives - improve safety, relieve congestion, support economic development, or enhance connectivity. Take a look at the draft Purpose and Need for this project below. This will serve as the guide for the project design concepts are evaluated and shared with the public for feedback.

Environmental Process

The Project Team is conducting an extensive environmental screening to understand the existing environmental conditions in the corridor and identify potential impacts and necessary mitigation efforts. The Project Team has already begun field work and the process of documenting existing conditions in the corridor. The map below notes several of the environmental resources within the corridor.

Traffic

In addition to environmental screening, the Project Team has analyzed traffic conditions in the corridor to understand the current level of traffic and develop projections for traffic growth in the future. The Project Team is using 2052 as the “design year” to accommodate future traffic along the corridor. The findings of the traffic analysis are below and highlight the importance of addressing future traffic congestion today since the levels of congestion will only continue to increase in the future.

Alternatives

Based on the traffic analysis and environmental screening, the Project Team developed roadway design options known as “alternatives.” The alternatives and a no-build scenario are screened against specific criteria and either eliminated or move forward for additional screening. Part of the screening process includes feedback from the public. The Project Team is presenting the alternatives below for public feedback to help identify impacts to the community and feasibility.

These alternatives are conceptual only! No decision has been made, and the design is not final. The Project Team will screen the alternatives based on your feedback, environmental impacts, their ability to meet the project Purpose & Need, and other criteria. The Project Team will refine the alternatives throughout the screening process to avoid or minimize impacts to the local environment and present a Recommended Preferred Alternative at a public hearing and collect public feedback before any decisions are made or the design is finalized.
